CODFA PRESIDENT STANKO ADDRESSES BOT: ENCOURAGE CONTINUED OPEN DIALOG EVEN THOUGH WE HAVE DISAGREEMENTS

Nancy Stanko, President of the COD Faculty Association and Professor of Office Technology Information, made the following comments to the Board of Trustees at its meeting December 10, 2009:

Good evening, Board of Trustees, Dr. Breuder, members of the COD administration, faculty, and members of the audience. I am Nancy Stanko, President of the COD Faculty Association.

Giving thanks at this time of year is important. We give thanks to you as Board members for your time, energy, and efforts this past year. We give thanks to you, too, Dr. Breuder, and all of our new administration. We encourage continued open dialog even though we have disagreements. Better business practice includes decisions that are made that are well-thought out with all stakeholder input.

I'd also like to thank Lisa Higgins as she has completed her second year as vice president of our Association. I thank her for all her efforts during these past two years.

Thank you for including me in the Glen Ellyn Community Night this past Tuesday evening where community members of Glen Ellyn gave valuable input and examples with recommendations about how we could all work together in our future. I look forward to the outcomes that happen as a result of the input of each of the "Community Nights" that have been planned.

We are excited that tonight's Agenda includes the approval for a new Renewable Energy Certificate Program and a new Associate of Arts in Teaching Early Childhood Education Degree. As you may see from the comprehensive information that is included, it takes many hours, days, months, and sometimes years for new certificates and degrees to be created. Thank you for your approval this evening.

We are also excited to see the support and approval of six full-time faculty members join our tenure process. Each of them has proven to be valuable and important to the success of their programs.

We again object to the Board Policies that are being presented this evening and ask that you withdraw them. This is a departure from the process used in the past, and it is unacceptable to the COD Faculty Association. Any impact that the new policies and procedures have on terms and conditions of employment must be bargained with the Association and making changes may result in a violation of the Act. As you know, we have filed an Unfair Labor Practice suit, and we continue to object to the method used for these changes. The Policies included on today's Agenda include language that is not included in our Contract.

Thank you and have a safe and Happy Holiday Season.
