Welfare Note #20

Another offering in a series of "Welfare Notes" that has been created by the Welfare Committee which are intended to ensure that all members of the Faculty Association are educated, informed, or updated in terms of welfare-related concerns and their rights contained within the Contractual Agreement.

Changes in the Contract for Summer 2009 Only (11/03/08)

Before we make our decisions about summer teaching or work, Faculty should be aware of changes to our contract that were recently negotiated.

Two Semester Faculty

Compensation: Faculty assigned to 30% of an academic year's full load and who schedule 56 office hours and 16 hours of mutually agreed service will receive 24% of the previous academic year's salary. Note that the office hours have been reduced from 72 to 56. If no agreement is reached about the 16 hours of service, then the compensation will be 23%. This represents a change from 25% of previous year's salary in the first case and 23.7% in the second case.

As before, office hours and compensation will be reduced on a pro rata basis for a smaller teaching load. Any teaching load over 30% will be compensated at the overload rate. The maximum summer load is 50% of the regular academic year's load including load and overload.

Upon the request of a Faculty Member or Coordinator with agreement from the appropriate Administrator, a 10 week summer course may be offered for that term.

OARS will be paid as a stipend. Faculty may volunteer for OARS; approval for the assignment is by the appropriate Administrator.

Note that there will be additional changes for summer, 2010.

Nine Month Faculty

Compensation: Faculty assigned 344 hours will be paid 24% of the previous academic year's salary.

This represents a change from 25% of the previous year's salary. On the other hand, the assigned hours have been reduced from 360. The maximum summer load is now 573 hours including load and overload instead of 600 hours.

Compensation will be reduced on a pro rata basis for smaller loads.

As always, first, read the section (F 6 Summer Assignments p. 72- 76) in the Contractual Agreement between the Board and the Association!

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact any member of the Welfare Committee.
