Welfare Note #16
Another offering in a series of "Welfare Notes" that has been created by the Welfare Committee which are intended to ensure that all members of the Faculty Association are educated, informed, or updated in terms of welfare-related concerns and their rights contained within the Contractual Agreement.
Summer Assignments
Section F 6 of our Contractual Agreement for 2003 through 2007 contains the provisions for Faculty assignments for summer under the semester system. See: http://www.cod.edu/dept/Hum_Res/EMPL_COD/FTFacContract.htm#
F%206%20%20SUMMER%20ASSIGNMENTS
Full-time load during summer term
Faculty Members assigned a full-time load during the summer will be required to complete 30 % of an academic year’s full load. For example, if your usual teaching load is 15 contact hours per semester or 30 contact hours per academic year, your full-time summer load would be 9 contact hours. For Faculty Members teaching courses with contact hours in excess of credit hours, the normal teaching load is 16 contact hours per semester or 32 contact hours per academic year; hence, a full-time load for summer would be 9.6 contact hours.
Office hours and Mutually-agreed upon service
- Full-time Faculty assigned 30 % of an academic year’s full load who complete 72 scheduled office hours and 16 hours of mutually agreed upon service will be compensated at 25 % of the previous academic year’s base salary.
- If a Faculty Member does not want to complete 16 hours of mutually agreed upon service or if mutual agreement cannot be reached, then compensation will be 23.7 % of the previous academic year’s base salary.
- Faculty Members may complete all office hours during the period of instruction.
- Mutually agreed upon service will be consistent with section D 6 of the Contractual Agreement, DUTIES OF FACULTY MEMBERS, and may include, but is not limited to, additional office hours, advising, or instructional design. Faculty Members may complete all office hours during the period of instruction.
Overload
Overload assignments (contact hours in excess of the aforementioned totals) will be compensated at the same rate of pay as authorized for part-time faculty.
Less than full-time load
- Compensation for less than full summer session loads will be reduced on a pro-rata basis. For example, if a normal full load for summer is 9 contact hours and a faculty member teaches one 3 contact hour class, compensation for summer will be equal to 3/9 or 1/3 of 25 % of the previous academic year’s base salary.
- Total office hours will also be reduced on a pro-rata basis (based on a total of 88 hours). Continuing with the example above, required office hours will be 3/9 or 1/3 of the 88 hour total or 29 and 1/3 office hours which can completed entirely within the period of instruction.
Term and work week length limits
Finally, no Faculty Member will be assigned more than a 4 day work week in any summer session without his/her written consent and all summer classes will be scheduled over 8 or fewer consecutive weeks. Please refer to Section F 6 (http://www.cod.edu/dept/Hum_Res/EMPL_COD/FTFacContract.htm#
