Welfare Note #9
Another offering in a series of "Welfare Notes" that has been created by the Welfare Committee which are intended to ensure that all members of the Faculty Association are educated, informed, or updated in terms of welfare-related concerns and their rights contained within the Contractual Agreement.
Summer Assignment and Mutual Agreement on Additional Service for Summer 2004 Only!
The following information and recommendations are offered to you by the CODFA Welfare Committee.
As you may recall, late last Fall Quarter, a "Full-time Faculty Summer Assignment Information Form" was distributed for Summer 2004 assignments. And you may have also recalled, in Summer 2003, Association Grievance 03-07 was filed and settled regarding the situation of a full load being taught over eight weeks, and the Three Quarter Assignment faculty member's interest in providing the 20 additional hours of service to the College which would result in payment for Summer at the rate of .25 of the academic year salary (rather that .20 of the academic year salary). Just this week, a revision to the form released last Fall Quarter was distributed via email and hard copy to your mailbox.
Welfare would like to make the following recommendations to Faculty. We believe that should you follow these recommendations, you are likely to encounter less difficulty in the determination of your summer assignment for the Summer 2004 as well as the determination of the rate of pay.
These recommendations apply to those Faculty desiring to teach a full load in eight weeks during the upcoming Summer 2004 term. In order to ensure that you will be paid at the rate of .25 of the academic year salary :
1. Prior to completing the most recently distributed "Full-time Faculty Summer Assignment Information Form" in a timely fashion, we encourage you to meet personally with the administrator who is your immediate supervisor. In this conversation, discuss and reach mutual agreement on the dates, times, location and nature of the 20 additional hours of service that you will be providing to the College. Be sure that both of you are clear as to whether the additional 20 hours is to be provided within the dates of your eight week assignment or beyond the dates of your eight week assignment!
Please note that if you work Course Schedule Planning Sessions (CSPS) during a period that is beyond your 8-week assignment, that should not be viewed as part of the 20 hours of service. CSPS is an assignment that counts as part of a full load or overload and must be a paid assignment. In working CSPS beyond your 8-week assignment, your total assignment would be for more than 8 weeks and therefore invalidates the requirement of 20 hours of service.
2. Request that your administrator put the specifics of this mutual agreement in writing or put them in writing yourself and secure your administrator's signature and approval on that document
3. Note the specifics of the agreement somewhere on the "Full-time Faculty Summer Assignment Information Form" or attach, to the form, a copy of the note signed by your administrator.
4. Keep a copy of the document containing the specifics of this mutual agreement and your administrator's signature and approval.
5. If you encounter problems during your attempt to reach mutual agreement on this issue, please contact a member of the Welfare Committee.
By following these steps, you should avoid the unpleasant circumstance of teaching a full load in eight weeks with the hope of being paid at the rate of .25 (rather than .20).
Make it a great day!!
