Grievance Note #5

Grade Changes Are To Be Made By The Instructor

Your CODFA Grievance Subcommittee wants to keep you informed, to the greatest extent possible, about grievances that have been filed and their subsequent resolutions. After all, if it happened to one of us, it could happen to any of us! Please be assured that, in all cases, confidentiality will be maintained and no personal or departmental information will be revealed.

Resolved: Grade Changes Are To Be Made By The Instructor Of Record Except In Emergency/Extenuating Circumstances (08-02)

Grievance 08-02 was filed by the Association on behalf of all faculty members after it was discovered that an administrator had ordered grade changes for a student in two classes without prior discussion with, notice to, or consent of the two instructors. While these unilateral grade changes occurred within the context of a very complicated and unusual situation, CODFA filed the grievance in order to insure that the administration understood and acknowledged that the Instructor of Record bears the primary responsibility for issuing and/or changing grades, except in emergency or extenuating circumstances.

The grievance was resolved with a written agreement that every effort must be made by the administration to communicate with the Instructor of Record prior to an administrator's making a grade change, within this context of emergency or extenuating circumstances. In addition, the administration agrees to notify CODFA, the area/program coordinator, and the Instructor of Record, if available, of all grade changes directed by a college administrator.

Please let me, or anyone on Welfare, know if you have any questions about this grievance resolution, or if you are experiencing difficulties surrounding grade changes by an administrator without your prior knowledge or consent.
