Grievance Note #3

Student Evaluations

Your CODFA Grievance Subcommittee wants to keep you informed, to the greatest extent possible, about grievances that have been filed and their subsequent resolutions. After all, if it happened to one of us, it could happen to any of us! Please be assured that, in all cases, confidentiality will be maintained and no personal or departmental information will be revealed.

Resolved: Improperly Obtained Student Evaluations May Not Be Used (07-07)

Grievance 07-07 was filed by a faculty member (FM) who discovered that the Associate Dean (AD) had solicited student evaluations and e-mail comments from students in a class the FM had been teaching prior to taking an approved leave about halfway through Spring 2007 term. The FM had no prior knowledge of these out-of-cycle evaluations and only became aware of them when the AD mentioned them while discussing scheduling concerns for the current term.

The FM challenged both the solicitation of these evaluations/comments and the AD’s reference to them in the context of work assignment disputes. The grievance was granted at Step Two and all hard / electronic copies of the evaluations / comments will be destroyed. Further, no reference to them will be made in any college-related matter, including, but not limited to, evaluations or potential disciplinary actions.

Please let me know if you have any questions about this grievance resolution, or if you are experiencing difficulties surrounding student evaluations. Many thanks to Mike Drafke, the CODFA co-representative on this grievance.
